COVID-19 effectively shut down the United States economy for the past few months. You’ve probably heard many different names for the virus, and one name that stood out to me was The Epoch Times calling it the “CCP virus” because the Chinese Communist Party is the reason it was released into the world. 1 While I think that is the best name I’ve heard for the virus, and the most appropriate, the actual CCP virus is extremely dangerous to the free-market capitalist state of America that we know today, and it has been around a lot longer than COVID-19.
Throughout 2019, the beacon of hope and freedom in China stood tall in Hong Kong. Its citizens took peaceful protests to the streets of their city to protest China’s totalitarian government. People throughout America and the world loved seeing this and had hope that Hong Kong would make progress in moving China away from communism and closer to free-market capitalism. I even had a picture of the Hong Kong protestors as my phone’s wallpaper.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 halted protests in Hong Kong. Now, China has passed a new security law 2 that is adding to the Chinese government’s power and could threaten Hong Kong’s right to protest and could result in many going to prison. The law will “crackdown on subversive and secessionist activity in Hong Kong,” according to the Associated Press’s report. 3
The United States Congress has taken action against China. 4 It even looks like the Left in Washington is once again pushing back against communism with unanimous support in the House and Senate for the bill. China is posing a dangerous threat not only for the people of China but also for America. If you don’t believe me, look at what the Department of Defense said. China is the “largest long-term threat to the United States.” 5
China is already controlling its citizens using technology, 6 the government currently grades its citizens and based on each person’s grade, decides what jobs they get, what travel you can do, and decides many life choices for Chinese citizens. 7 If you think that there’s no issue with major American companies working with the Chinese government, you should think again. The Chinese government is Making China 1984 Again, and they’ll be coming for America next if we’re not careful.
China’s influence goes well beyond its own country. They control many economies and just bought their way onto the United Nations Human Rights Council. 8 China also has more than one million ethnic minorities imprisoned in re-education camps. 9 Kudaybergen Serik was sent to one of these camps and said it was “seven days of hell.” 10 That is the opposite of what any human rights council should aim to achieve.
China is slowly continuing to gain power throughout the world, and they already have a lot of influence in Hollywood and Silicon Valley. It’s time for the United States to stand up to the communist Chinese government and hold them accountable.
