You’ve likely heard a democratic socialist say, “We need to be more like Denmark” or “We should model our government like the Scandinavian countries. Scandinavian socialism works.” All you have to do is a little bit of research, and you’ll quickly find out that the Scandinavian countries are not making socialism work because they’re not socialist. 1
Even at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, when people freaked out over the lack of toilet paper and supplies, people cried capitalism was failing us. The only problem with that argument was that a few days later, the shelves were stocked full of the missing items, which was something that socialist countries failed to do.
The radical left also used this time to push their radical agenda. They disguise their movement by saying they want to implement the same policies that the Nordic countries have while actually pushing for the same policies that destroyed Venezuela, once a thriving country now filled with turmoil and breadlines. 2
The socialist left wants to redistribute wealth and “eat the rich.” That is similar to what Hugo Chavez did when he took office. He claimed he would redistribute wealth to help lift people out of poverty, but the only thing he did was destroy small businesses and put more people into poverty. Chavez and Venezuelan socialists also played identity politics, and that is the current American socialist’s biggest playing card today. Nothing has changed since Nicholas Maduro has taken office.
Of course, the socialist left isn’t going to mention Venezuela or openly use it as an example of what they want to do in America because, why would they? If they offered Venezuela to Americans, then they’d stand no chance at implementing their policies. They tout Sweden’s welfare state while forgetting to mention that Sweden has a free market and a lower corporate tax than the United States.
Sweden is pro-capitalism, and capitalism is one thing you won’t find in Venezuela or the Democratic Socialist policies. Many Venezuelans go to sleep hungry and don’t have the proper medical supplies for some of the simplest things and struggle to find necessities when a life is on the line. 3 Venezuela is tragically collapsing while implementing the same policies that Democratic Socialists want to implement in the United States. 4 It’s clear that American socialists don’t want Scandinavia for America; they want Venezuela.
