By Matthew Castaneda
Hello everyone, my name is Matthew Castaneda and I am excited to be one of the newest contributing writers for Young Americans against Socialism.
I was born in New Jersey to Colombian immigrants who came to this country to seek the life they never had in a country that was rife with corruption and violence. My hobbies include listening to and discovering rising music artists, reading books, following soccer and basketball, and to tee up at the golf course! A fun fact about myself is that I appeared on Fox News on “The Story with Martha MacCallum” in July 2019 while serving as the New Jersey State Chair for Young Americans for Liberty to discuss Hispanic voter turnout for the 2020 election.
My relationship with socialism is that supporters of the ideology nearly killed my father while he served in the Colombian army a few years before he left for the United States. Colombia had a major internal conflict with paramilitary guerrilla groups at the time and one of the most notorious ones of all was the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia People’s Army (known as FARC) who were inspired by the ideas of Marxism-Leninism, Guevarism, and the Foco Theory. Along with being a contributor at YAAS, I also work with Young Americans for Liberty as the Northeast Deputy Regional Director for the organization and I look to empower young activists such as ourselves in order to take action in the electoral process and to ensure that socialists will never take control of this great nation.
A New Jersey native and son of Colombian immigrants, Matthew's strongest passion is to defend the very liberties that drew his family to the United States in the first place. Matthew graduated from The Rutgers Business School in May 2020 with a B.S. in Finance. Throughout his time in college and after, Matthew has served for Young Americans for Liberty as the New Jersey State Chair and now in his current role as the Northeast Deputy Regional Director. Aside from being a political junkie, Matthew's hobbies are following soccer, basketball, and teeing up at the golf course!
